We now have four-month-old mice that don't have diabetes, but used to," he added. Dr. Ehud Ur, professor of medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and chair of the clinical and scientific division of the Canadian Diabetes Association, reminded that they were just getting started. Like other experts, he is skeptical about the question of whether his diabetes can be cured, noting that these findings have no value for people who already have type 1 diabetes. On Monday, Sara Danius, the permanent secretary of the Nobel Committee for Literature at the Swedish Academy, announced during a radio program on Sveriges Radio in Sweden that the committee had been unable to reach Bob Dylan to tell him he had won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature and would not be making any further efforts to do so. Danius said, "We're doing nothing right now. I've called and emailed and gotten friendly responses. At this point, that's enough." Earlier, Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff noted that the company was founded when his garage doorbell wasn't audible in his garage. He said he made a Wi-Fi doorbell. Siminoff said sales increased after he appeared on an episode of Shark Tank in 2013, in which the show's panel declined to invest in the startup. Siminoff appeared on shopping channel QVC in late 2017. Ring also settled a lawsuit with ADT Corporation, a competing security company. One experimental vaccine appears to be able to reduce Ebola deaths, but no drugs are known to be effective in treating existing infections. A cocktail of antibodies, ZMapp, was initially promising in the field, but official studies showed it was less effective than desired in preventing deaths. ZMapp was a control in the PALM trial, so scientists used it as a baseline and compared the three other treatments to it. The U.S. Olympic Committee supports USA Gymnastics and understands that the Olympic family must be a safe place for all athletes. We agree with the USOC's statement that it is in the best interest of our athletes and clubs, and their sport, to make meaningful changes to our organization instead of revoking certifications. USA Gymnastics supports an independent investigation that can bring more clarity to how such widespread abuse, as bravely described by the survivors of Larry Nassar, could have gone undetected for so long, and embraces all necessary and applicable changes. USA Gymnastics and the USOC have the same goal: helping athletes pursue their dreams in a safe, positive and empowering environment through the sport of gymnastics and other sports as safely as possible. In the 1960s, Brzezinksi worked as an advisor to John F. Kennedy and then for Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. He advised Carter on foreign policy during the 1976 presidential campaign. In a statement from his press secretary, U.S. President Donald Trump said U.S. troops would withdraw from Syria. The announcement came after a phone call between Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turks also said they would guard the ISIS prisoners, which Europe did not want back. This not only confirms the long-held theory that at least some dinosaurs had feathers, but also provides more details than fossils, such as color and three-dimensional placement. According to scientists, the plumage of this bird was chestnut-brown with a pale or carotenoid-colored underparts. The discovery also sheds light on the evolution of feathers in birds. The researchers concluded that the vertebrae were likely a later evolutionary development because dinosaur feathers do not have well-developed shafts, or vertebrae, but do have other features of feathers, such as barbs. The structure of the feathers suggests they were not used for flight, but for temperature regulation or appearance. The researchers suggested it was the tail of a juvenile dinosaur, but that this monster shows fully grown feathers and so is not the down of a chick. The researchers suggested that, despite being the tail of a juvenile dinosaur, the monster had the plumage of an adult and not the down of a chick. A car bomb exploded at a police headquarters in Gaziantep, Turkey, on Tuesday, killing two police officers and wounding more than 20 others. Nineteen police officers were among the wounded, the governor said. Police suspect a Daesh (ISIS) militant of carrying out the attack. This showed that the Sun follows the same principles as other stars: all stellar activity in the system is based solely on the brightness and rotation of the stars. The brightness and rotation are used to determine the Rossby number of a star, which is related to the plasma flow. The fewer Rossby waves, the less active the star is in magnetic reversals. Iwasaki ran into trouble on several occasions during his trek. Pirates robbed him, a rabid dog attacked him in Tibet, he escaped an arranged marriage in Nepal and was arrested in India. The 802.11n standard is compatible with both frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. The base station's dual radios enable backward compatibility with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. 802.11n speeds are significantly faster than those of predecessors with a maximum theoretical capacity of 600Mbit/s. Duvall is married with two children and made no impression on Miller, to whom the story was related. In response to a request for comment, Millar said: "Mike talks a lot during the hearing ... I was preparing, so I wasn't really listening to him." We will do our utmost to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of BBP in 2020 by a significant margin compared with 2005, Hu said. He has not set numbers for the cuts because he says they will be determined based on China's economic output. Hu urged developing countries to "avoid the old way of first polluting and then cleaning up." He added, however, that they should not be asked to take on responsibilities beyond their development, level, capacity and ability. The Iraqi study group presented their report today at 12:00 GMT. The warning is that no one can guarantee that any trading in Iraq today will end sectarian warfare, escalating violence or chaos. The report begins with a plea for an open discussion and consensus-building in the U.S. on Middle East policy. The report is highly critical of virtually every aspect of current U.S. policy toward Iraq and strongly recommends a different course. The report contains 78 recommendations, the first of which is that diplomatic action must be taken this year to protect Iraq's borders from hostile forces and to restore diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, a senator and the wife of the Argentine president, announced on Tuesday night in La Plata, a city 50 km (31 miles) from Buenos Aires, that she would run for president. Ms. Kirchner announced her intention to run for the presidency at the Argentine Theater, where she launched her 2005 Senate campaign as a member of the Buenos Aires provincial delegation. The debate was sparked by a discussion about investing and rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Some fiscal conservatives jokingly referred to it as "The New Orleans Deal of Bush." Liberal criticism of reconstruction efforts has focused on the awarding of reconstruction contracts to alleged Washington insiders. The funeral was attended by more than four million people in Rome. There were so many mourners that not everyone could get into St Peter's Square for the funeral. Television screens were set up in various places in Rome so people could watch the ceremony. Similar demonstrations were held in many other Italian cities and in the rest of the world, especially in Poland, where a large number of people watched. Historians have criticized earlier FBI guidelines for focusing on easy-to-solve cases, such as stolen cars, to boost the bureau's success ratio. Congress began funding the obscenity initiative in fiscal year 2005 and declared that the FBI must dedicate 10 agents to adult pornography. Robin Uthappa scored the highest in the innings with 70 runs off 41 balls, hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes. Middle-order batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid put on a century stand. Since the federal government took over funding from the Mersey Hospital in Devonport, Tasmania, the government and some federal parliamentarians have criticized the law as a stunt during the lead-up to November's federal elections. However, Prime Minister John Howard said the legislation was aimed at preventing the Tasmanian government from clawing back the hospital's funding by 45 million Australian dollars. According to the latest bulletin, the tide gauge indicated a tsunami. There has been some clear tsunami activity near Pago Pago and Niue. There was no major damage or serious injuries reported in Tonga, although power was knocked out for several hours, which prevented the Tongan authorities from receiving the tsunami warning from the PTWC. The warnings were canceled, but 14 schools in Hawaii were closed for the entire day Wednesday near coastal areas. U.S. President George W. Bush welcomed the announcement. A Bush administration spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, described the North Korean pledge as "a big step toward our goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula." Subtropical Storm Jerry, the tenth named storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, formed today over the Atlantic Ocean. Jerry is not currently a threat to the mainland, according to the NHC (National Hurricane Center). According to U.S. Corps of Engineers calculations, 6 inches of rain could cause the earlier damaged levees to break. In the Ninth Ward, the water stood at more than 20 feet high during Hurricane Katrina. The water is still up to the middle of the street because the nearby levee could not hold it back. Water is flowing over 100 feet of the dike. Commons administrator Adam Cuerden voiced his frustrations over the removal last month during an interview with Wikinews. He (Wales) lied to us from the beginning. First by pretending it was about legal reasons. Then by pretending he was listening to us until he took the art away." The community's frustrations led to the current efforts to develop a policy on the site's sexual content, which hosts millions of pieces of media under open licenses. The completed work was mostly theoretical in nature, but the program was written to simulate observations of the Sagittarius Galaxy. The team was looking for the effect caused by the tidal forces between the dark matter of the universe and that of the Milky Way. Similar to how the moon exerts force on the Earth, causing tides, the Milky Way exerts force on the Sagittarius galaxy. The researchers concluded that dark matter affects other dark matter in the same way as normal matter. According to this theory, most of the dark matter in a galaxy is distributed around it, in a sort of ring, and is made up of a large number of smaller particles. You can see white smoke coming from the plant on television footage. Local authorities have issued the following warning: Residents living near the factory should stay indoors, turn off air conditioners and avoid drinking tap water. Japan's nuclear agency says radioactive cesium and iodine has been detected at the plant Authorities suspect that this may indicate that containers of uranium fuel may have been damaged and leaked. XDR-TB (Extremely Drug Resistant Tuberculosis) was discovered by Dr. Tony Moll in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He said in an interview that the new variant is "very concerning and worrisome" due to its high mortality rate. Dr. Moll believes some patients contracted the disease in the hospital, including two hospital workers. A single infected person can infect 10 to 15 close contacts in a year. However, the percentage of XDR-TB among all tuberculosis patients remains low: 6,000 out of 330,000 infected people at any given time in South Africa. The two satellites, each weighing more than 1,000 pounds and traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour, collided 491 miles above Earth. Scientists say the collision caused an enormous explosion. They are still trying to determine the size of the impact and how it will affect the Earth. The United States Strategic Command of the U.S. Department of Defense is tracking the debris. The results of the plot analysis are posted on a public website. A doctor at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is charged with murder with aggravating circumstances after the body of her mother was found in the trunk of her car Wednesday, officials in Ohio said. Dr. Malar Balasubramanian, 29, was found in his T-shirt, underwear and heavily medicated state along a highway in Blue Ash, Ohio, a suburb about 15 miles north of Cincinnati. She sent officers to her black Oldsmobile Intrigue, which was 500 feet away. Here they found the body of Saroja Balasubramanian, 53, covered in blood-soaked sheets. Police said the body had been there for about a day. The first cases of the disease were reported at the end of July. Pigs carry the disease and pass it on to humans via mosquitoes. India's government, in response to the epidemic, has decided to deploy people to catch pigs in the worst-hit parts of the country, distribute thousands of blankets and spread disinfectants. The government has pledged several million doses of the vaccine, so health services can prepare for next year. Plans to deliver vaccines to the hardest-hit areas this year have been put on hold due to a lack of funding and the low priority of other diseases. Slaney moved to Sweden in 1956, where he joined the Swedish Postal Service in 1959 as Chief Engraver. He produced more than 1,000 stamps for Sweden and 28 other countries. His work is recognized for its quality and detail, and his name is a household word among stamp collectors. Some collectors specialize in collecting only his work. The stunning "Great Deeds by Swedish Kings" stamp, designed by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl in 2000 and listed in the Guinness Book of Records, was his 1,000th stamp. For many countries, he created engravings for banknotes. Recent examples of his work are the portraits of the Prime Minister on the front of Canada's new $5 and $100 bills. After the accident, Gibson was taken to hospital where he later died. The 64-year-old truck driver was not injured in the crash. The vehicle itself was removed from the scene of the accident around 12:00 GMT on the same day. A garage worker near the scene said: "There were kids waiting to cross and they were all screaming and crying." They all ran away from the scene of the accident. Other issues on the agenda include protecting the world's remaining forests, as well as sharing technologies to help developing countries grow in a less polluting way. The U.N. also hopes to set up a fund to help countries cope with the effects of global warming. Flood-resilient housing, more efficient water management and diversification of crops could be investments where the money could be used. Fluke wrote: "Some people tried to stop women from speaking out about women's health, but those efforts failed." This was based on the many positive comments and support from both men and women who felt contraception should be considered a medical necessity. When the fighting stopped after the wounded were transported to the hospital, about 40 of the other remaining prisoners remained on the courtyard and refused to return to their cells. Negotiators were trying to get the situation back on track, but the prisoners' demands were unclear. Between 22:00 and 23:00 local time, inmates set fire to the courtyard. Agents in riot gear quickly entered the yard and forced the inmates into a corner with tear gas. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control at 11:35 a.m. Seasonal flooding, which would have spread sediment down the river, ended with the construction of the dam in 1963. This sediment was necessary to create sand bars and beaches that served as habitats for wildlife. The result was that two fish species went extinct and two others are threatened, including the Gila cypha. After the flood, the water level will rise only a few meters, but officials hope that will be enough to restore the eroded sandbars downstream. No tsunami warning has been issued. According to Jakarta's geophysical bureau, that will not happen because the quake was not of magnitude 6.5, which is the minimum required to issue a tsunami warning. There was no tsunami threat, but residents panicked and left their businesses and homes. While Winfrey tearfully bid farewell, she promised her fans she'd be back. I'm not retiring. Amsterdam city officials and Anne Frank House staff say the tree has a fungus and poses a threat to public health because they say it could fall over. The tree was due to be felled on Tuesday, but a court injunction prevented it. The entrances to the cave were named "The Seven Sisters" and have diameters of at least 100 to 250 meters. Infrared images show that nighttime and daytime temperatures are different and that they are likely to be caves. They are cooler than the surrounding surface during the day and warmer at night. Its thermal behavior is not as stable as that of large caves on Earth, which often maintain a fairly constant temperature. What is consistent is that they are deep holes in the ground," said Glen Cushing of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Team and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Voting in France has traditionally required little technology: voters go into a booth and insert a pre-printed piece of paper into an envelope marked with the candidate they are voting for. Officials first check the voter's identity. Then the voter slides the envelope into the ballot box and signs the voter roll. The process is relatively tightly defined in France's electoral law. Voting buses have been required to be transparent since 1988, so that both voters and observers can see that there are no envelopes in the ballot box at the beginning of voting and that no other envelopes are added to the ballot box except those of registered and authorized voters. Candidates may send representatives to observe any part of the process. Volunteers count the ballots at night under strict supervision and according to specific procedures. The ASUS Eee PC, which was launched worldwide due to cost-cutting and various features, was extensively discussed at the Taipei IT Month in 2007. However, the consumer laptop market is highly fragmented and has changed since ASUS won the Taiwan Sustainable Award in 2007 from the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China. The station's website describes the show as "old school radio drama with a new and unexpected twist!" At first, the show was only broadcast on the long-running radio web site TogiNet Radio, a site about radio talk shows. At the end of 2015, AstroNet Radio sub-station was established. The series originally featured local amateur voice actors from East Texas. The widespread looting reportedly took place at night because there were no police on the streets of Bishkek. Bishkek was described by one person as an "anarchic state" where gangs roamed the streets and shops selling consumer goods were looted. In Bishkek, several people blamed the unrest on demonstrators from the south. In the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, the same country eliminated New Zealand's All Blacks in a Tri Nations rugby union match. As a result, the performers smoke cannabis on stage. The theater itself encourages the audience to participate. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. When the results were announced, Gingrich praised Santorum, but criticized Romney, whose campaign had run negative ads against Gingrich in Iowa. Perry said he would "return to Texas to assess the results of tonight's vote to see if there's still a chance for me in this race," but later said he would finish the race and compete in South Carolina's Jan. 21 primary. Bachmann, the winner of the Ames Straw Poll in August, dropped out of the race. The photographer was then taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he died. According to sources, he was in his 20s. "I was not present or directly involved in this unfortunate incident, but my thoughts are with the victim's family," Bieber said in a statement. The entertainment news website TMZ says the photographer parked his car on the other side of the Sepulveda Boulevard and tried to take photos of the traffic stop before crossing the street and taking more photos, which led to the California Highway Patrol officer who was conducting the traffic stop asking him twice to go back to his car. The driver of the vehicle that struck the photographer is unlikely to face criminal charges, police said. Only 18 medals are awarded each day, so many countries were left off the podium. The U.N. peacekeeping mission, which arrived in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, is being blamed for spreading the disease that broke out at its camp. The trial revealed that waste from the U.N. camp was poorly treated, allowing bacteria to enter the Artibonite River, one of Haiti's largest. Haiti had not had the disease since 1800 until the troops arrived. The Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti spoke of independent students who said the Nepalese U.N. peacekeeping battalion had unwittingly brought the disease to Haiti. Danielle Lantagne, a U.N. disease expert, said the outbreak was likely caused by peacekeepers. Hamilton confirmed that the patient is being treated at Howard University Hospital and is in stable condition. The patient had traveled to Nigeria, where the Ebola virus was already present in small numbers. The hospital followed the protocol for infectious disease control, including isolating the patient to prevent others from being infected. Researchers at the university found that the two compounds react with each other to form crystals that can block kidney function. Scientists discovered that crystals form in cat urine when melanin and cyanuric acid are added. The composition of these crystals is similar to that of the urine of the affected pets, as compared by FTIR spectroscopy. I don't know if you realize this, but most of the goods from Central America came into this country duty-free. Yet 80 percent of our goods were taxed based on tariffs from countries in Central America. I thought that was very unfair. What I'm trying to say is that you treat us the way we treat you. Israel demands a permanent military presence in the valley for 10 years after a deal is signed, but the PA is only willing to allow a five-year presence. Shooters in the supplementary trials for pest control had to be closely monitored by foresters, as the trials were followed and their effectiveness assessed. In a partnership between the NPWS and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc, qualified volunteers were recruited for the Sporting Shooters Association's hunting program. According to Mick O'Flynn, acting director for park preservation and heritage at the NPWS, the four chosen marksmen for the first shooting operation have undergone extensive safety and training instruction. Yesterday, Martelly swore in a nine-member provisional electoral council (Provisional Electoral Council of CEP). In the past four years, Martelly has won the CEP five times. Last month, the presidential commission recommended the ouster of the previous National Election Commission as part of a package of measures to bring new elections to the country. The commission was established by Martelly in response to widespread protests against the government that have taken place since October. The sometimes violent protests were sparked by the failure to hold elections, some of which had been due since 2011. There have been about 60 reports of defective iPods overheating, resulting in six fires and four people with minor burns. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said it was aware of the 27 incidents related to the devices. Last week, METI announced that Apple had reported 34 additional incidents of overheating that the agency deemed "not serious." The ministry said it was "extremely regrettable" that Apple had delayed the report. Mariana was hit by the quake at 7:19 a.m. local time (Friday 21:19 GMT). The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Office of Emergency Management said there were no reports of widespread damage. In addition, the National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami warning. In Manila, the Philippine capital, a former Filipino policeman hijacked a bus carrying tourists from Hong Kong. Rolando Mendoza opened fire on the tourists with his M16 rifle. Various hostages have been freed and at least six fatalities have been confirmed. Six hostages were released earlier, including children and the elderly, and Filipino photographers. Later, the photographers returned in exchange for an older woman who needed to use the bathroom. Mendoza was eventually shot. Liggins went into medicine and followed in his father's footsteps. Trained as an obstetrician, he began work at the National Women's Hospital in Auckland in 1959. While working at the hospital, Liggins did research on premature births in his spare time. His research showed that the development of fetal lungs in babies was accelerated by the administration of a hormone. Xinhua reported Wednesday that government investigators had recovered two "black boxes" with flight recorders. Even Luna's rivals paid tribute to her. Tommy Dreamer said, "Luna was the first 'Queen of Extreme'. My first manager. Luna passed away on the night of two moons. As unique as she was. A strong woman." Dustin "Goldust" Runnels said, "Luna is just as crazy as I am... maybe even crazier... I love her and I'm going to miss her... hopefully she's in a better place." Of the 1,400 people surveyed for the 2010 federal election, the number of people opposed to Australia becoming a republic rose by eight per cent since 2008. Outgoing Prime Minister Julia Gillard said during the 2010 federal election campaign that Australia should become a republic after the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. 34 per cent of those surveyed agreed with this view. They want Queen Elizabeth II to be the last monarch of Australia. 29 per cent of respondents said Australia should become a republic as soon as possible, while 31 per cent said it should never happen. The Olympic gold medallist swam the 100m and 200m freestyle and three relay events at the Commonwealth Games, but his fitness was questioned due to his complaints. He could not take the painkillers he needed because they were banned for the Games. Curtis Cooper, a mathematician and computer science professor at the University of Central Missouri, discovered the largest known prime number on Jan. 25. Multiple people verified the discovery using different hardware and software and it was announced on Tuesday. Comets could have been a source of water on Earth, along with organic material that forms proteins and supports life. Scientists hope to gain insight into how planets form. They especially want to know how the Earth formed, given that it's been a long time since comets have collided with it. Cuomo, 53, was sworn in as governor earlier this year and signed a law last month legalizing same-sex marriages. He called the rumors "political nonsense and gossip." He is rumored to be running for president in 2016. With the NextGen system, planes would be able to take shorter routes, saving millions of gallons of fuel and reducing carbon emissions each year. It uses satellite-based technology rather than older ground-based radars, allowing air traffic controllers to better locate aircraft and provide pilots with clearer information. No additional transport will be in place and there will be no surface trains calling at Wembley; in addition, the car parks and P&R will not be available on site. A lack of transport could increase the chances of the game being played behind closed doors and without supporters. A study published in the journal Science on Tuesday looked at the formation of a new bird species on the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. Researchers from Princeton University in the U.S. and Uppsala University in Sweden reported that new species evolved within two generations. They thought the process took much longer because it took longer for a native Darwin's finch, the medium ground finch, to hybridize with an immigrant cactus finch, the Española ground finch. Gold can be worked into many forms. It can be rolled into small shapes. It can be drawn into a fine wire that can be wound and braided. It can also be forged or rolled into sheets. Once it is very thin, it can be applied to another metal. It can even be made so thin that it was used for hand-painted illustrations in illuminated manuscripts. This is called the pH of a chemical. You are already making an indicator using red cabbage juice. Then the color of the sap changes based on the acidity (acid to alkaline) of the chemical compound. The pH value is determined by the amount of hydrogen ions (the H in pH) in the chemical being tested. Hydrogen atoms consist of one proton and one electron, while hydrogen ions are protons without electrons. Mix the two dry powders together, make your hands wet and clean and make a ball out of it. The moisture on your hands reacts with the outer layers, which feels strange and forms a kind of sheath. In the cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro, almost every house had a flush toilet connected to a sophisticated sewage system. Remnants of plumbing have been found in houses in Minoan cities on the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini. There were also toilets in China, Egypt and Persia in ancient times. In Roman times, toilets were often part of a public bathhouse, where men and women mingled in a mixed group. When you call someone who is thousands of miles away, you use a satellite. Once the satellite receives the call, it is immediately sent back. The satellite was launched into space by a rocket. Scientists use telescopes in space because the Earth's atmosphere distorts some of the light and image. To launch a satellite or telescope into space, you need an enormous rocket that is more than 30 meters long. The wheel has changed the world. The most important thing the wheel has given us is easier and faster transport. The train, the car and many other forms of transport are the result of this. They eat medium-sized prey, from hares to antelopes and deer. Furthermore, there are many small cats (such as feral cats kept as pets) that hunt in large numbers of small prey, such as insects, rodents, lizards, and birds. Their success comes from the idea of a niche, a special job for every cat so they don't have to compete with others. Lions are the most social cats and live in large groups called prides. Troops consist of one to three adult males that are related to each other and may have up to 30 females and pups. Women are usually closely related to each other and form a large family of sisters and daughters. A pack of lions behaves much like a pack of wolves or dogs, animals that are surprisingly similar to lions (but not to other large cats) and that are very deadly to their prey. The tiger is a versatile athlete and can climb (although not well), swim, jump long distances and has five times the strength of a strong person. The tiger belongs to the same group (Genus Panthera) as lions, leopards and jaguars. These four big cats are the only ones that can roar. A tiger doesn't roar like a lion. It's more like he's saying a whole sentence. Ocelots' favorite meal is small animals. They hunt monkeys, snakes, rodents, and birds when they can. Ocelots hunt almost exclusively for prey that is much smaller than they are. Scientists suspect that ocelots use their sense of smell to hunt small animals (their prey) by sniffing the ground where they have been. They have excellent night vision and are very stealthy. Ocelots hunt by blending in with their surroundings and then pouncing on their prey. When a small group of organisms (a small population) breaks away from the larger population from which they originated (for example, by moving across a mountain range or river, or by being transported to another island from which they cannot easily return), they often find themselves in a different environment than before. In this new environment, other resources and other enemies will be present, so the new population will have to adapt or adjust to be able to compete. Because they still require the same adaptations as before, the original population has not changed at all. As the new population began to adapt to their new environment, they also began to look less and less like the other population. After thousands or even millions of years, the two populations will be so different in appearance that they can no longer be considered the same species. This process is called speciation and simply refers to the formation of new species. Speciation is an unavoidable consequence and an important part of evolution. Plants produce oxygen that people breathe and they take in carbon dioxide that people exhale. Through photosynthesis, plants get their nutrients from the sun. They also provide shade. Our houses and clothing are made from plants. We eat mostly plants. Without plants, animals would not survive. The Mosasaurus was at the top of the food chain at the time. He had nothing to fear, except other Mosasauruses. His long jaws had more than 70 serrated teeth, plus an extra set in his gums, meaning nothing or no one could escape him. It is not certain, but it may have been forked. It ate turtles, large fish, other mosasaurs, and possibly even its own kind. In water fights, nothing was safe from his attacks; even giant dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex were no match for him. While most of their diet would be familiar to us, the Romans also had their share of exotic or unusual delicacies, including wild boar, peacocks, snails and a rodent known as a dormouse. Another difference was that poor people and women sat on chairs at mealtimes, but rich men preferred to lie on their sides at banquets while they ate. Roman meals did not include foods that came to Europe from the Americas or Asia in later centuries. They lacked, for example, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate. And no ancient Roman ever ate a turkey. The Babylonians built primary temples for all of their gods. These temples were seen as the god's own house. Offerings were made to the gods and priests tried to meet the needs of the gods by organizing ceremonies and festivals. Every temple had a public courtyard and a rear chamber accessible only to priests. Sometimes pyramid-shaped towers called ziggurats were built as part of the temples. The top of the tower was a special sanctuary for the god. Houses were not important in the Middle East's warm climate. Most of the Hebrew family's daily life took place outdoors. Women cooked in the garden; shops were no more than a counter along the street. Stone was used to build houses. There were no large forests in Canaan, so wood was extremely expensive. Greenland had few inhabitants. According to Norse sagas, Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder, found Greenland on his way west and gave it its name. He made the discovery, but there were already Eskimos living there at the time. Although they were all "Scandinavian" countries, the people, the royal family, customs, and history of Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and Norway were very different from each other. After watching National Treasure, you might think there's a treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. However, that is based on a misconception. There is something written on the back, but it is not a treasure map. On the back of the American Declaration of Independence are the words "Original American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776" at the bottom of the document. While no one knows for sure who wrote it, it is certain that the large parchment (29¾ inches by 24½ inches) was once rolled up for storage. Therefore, it appears that the designation was simply added as a label. The D-Day landings and subsequent fighting liberated northern France, but the south remained occupied. It was governed by Vichy France, which were Frenchmen who sided with the Germans in 1940 and therefore collaborated with the enemy rather than fighting them. On August 15, 1940, the Allies launched Operation Dragoon to invade southern France. The Americans and the Free French had liberated South France in just two weeks, then headed for Germany. A civilization is a single culture that is shared by a large group of people who live and work together in a society. The term "civilization" derives from the Latin civilis, which means "citizen" and civitas, which means "city" or "city-state" and defines the scope of society. City-states are the precursors of nations. A culture with a history of knowledge being passed down from generation to generation, a lasting cultural footprint, and a balanced distribution. When minority cultures disappear, they often leave no relevant historical evidence behind. As a result, they are not officially recognized as cultures. During the Revolution, thirteen states under the Articles of Confederation formed a weak central government, consisting only of a Congress. Congress lacked the power to levy taxes because there was no national executive or judiciary to carry out its decisions, and state authorities often refused to cooperate. It also did not have the authority to ignore tax laws and tariffs between states. First, all states had to unanimously agree to the articles before they could be amended, but the states did not take the national government seriously, so their representatives were often absent. The Italian national football team, along with the German team, is the second most successful team in the world and won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Popular sports include football, basketball, volleyball, water polo, fencing, rugby, cycling, ice hockey, roller hockey and F1 motor racing. Winter sports are particularly popular in the northern regions, where Italians compete in international competitions and Olympic events. Japan consists of nearly 7,000 islands (the largest being Honshu), making it the world's seventh largest island. Due to Japan's cluster/group of islands, it is often geographically referred to as an "archipelago" Taiwan's history began in the 1500s when European sailors passed by the island and named it Ilha Formosa, or Beautiful Island. In 1624, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) established itself in the southwest of Taiwan as a base of operations, taking over local grain production processes and employing Chinese laborers to work on rice and sugar plantations. In 1683, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) conquered the western and northern coastal areas of Taiwan, and in 1885 Taiwan was annexed as a province of the Qing Empire. After losing the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), the Qing government signs the Shimonoseki Treaty in 1895, ceding sovereignty over Taiwan to Japan, which rules the island until 1945. Machu Picchu is made up of three large structures: Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the buildings on the outskirts of the complex have been rebuilt to give tourists a better idea of how they used to look. In 1976, 30 percent of Machu Picchu had been restored. Restoration is still ongoing. For example, the most common still image format worldwide is 35mm, which was the standard film format at the end of the analog era. These are still being produced to this day, but the aspect ratio of the image captured by the digital camera's image sensor is more important. Strangely enough, 35mm film is actually 36mm wide, with a height of 24mm. The aspect ratio of this size (divide by 12 to get the simplest ratio of whole numbers) would be 3:2. Many popular indelings (e.g. APS-like indelings) are close to or equal to this aspect ratio. The third's rule, which is often abused and ridiculed by many, is a simple guideline that makes the image dynamic, but also concise. The most effective placement for the main subject is at the intersection of the lines. Divide the image vertically and horizontally into thirds (see example). During this period in European history, the powerful and wealthy Catholic Church was under fire. Christianity has united European states for more than a thousand years, despite differences in language and customs. From the king to the commoner, his all-encompassing power affected everyone. One of the most important principles of Christianity is that wealth should be used to alleviate suffering and poverty, and the church has the means to do so. The church had been the central authority in Rome for more than a thousand years, and this relationship of power and money led many to question whether the principle was being followed. Britain imposed a naval blockade on Germany almost immediately after the outbreak of hostilities. The strategy proved effective, as it was no longer possible to provide vital services to military personnel and civilians. The blockade, however, violated the generally accepted international law that had been codified in various international agreements over the past two centuries. Britain has placed mines in international waters, making it impossible for ships to navigate in many parts of the ocean, even for neutral ships. Because of the limited response to this tactic, Germany expected a similar response to its unrestricted submarine warfare. During the 1920s, most citizens and nations had an attitude of pacifism and isolation. After World War I, states wanted to prevent such horrors from ever happening again. Tesla emigrated to the United States in 1884 to work for the Edison Company in New York City. When he came to the United States, he had only 4 cents, a book of poetry, and a letter of recommendation from Charles Batchelor (his former boss) to Thomas Edison. Ancient China had a unique way of depicting different time periods; each phase of China or each ruling family had a distinct dynasty. There were also periods of instability between dynasties, the most famous being the Three Kingdoms period, which took place in the 60 years between the Han and Jin dynasties. At that time, there were fierce wars between various noblemen vying for the throne. The Three Kingdoms period is one of the bloodiest in Chinese history. Thousands of people died in the battle for supremacy at the imperial palace in Xi'an. The Revolution had major social and political consequences, such as the use of the metric system, a shift from absolute monarchy to republicanism, nationalism, and the idea that the country belongs to its citizens rather than to a single leader. After the revolution, jobs were available to all male applicants, allowing the most ambitious and qualified candidates to succeed. The same goes for the military. Ranks are no longer based on class, but on the caliber of the person. The French Revolution also inspired other countries' oppressed working classes to revolt. Muhammad devoted himself intensely to heavenly matters. He often retreated to a cave later known as the Cave of Hira in Mount Hira. The cave itself, which has withstood the ravages of time, gives a very vivid picture of the spirituality of Mohammed. The cave is located on a mountain peak on the north side of Mecca and is completely cut off from the rest of the world. Even if it was known that the cave existed, it was not easy to find. Once inside the cave, there is total isolation. The only thing visible is the bright, beautiful air and the many surrounding mountains. From the cave, there is very little of the outside world to see or hear. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the World still standing. The Great Pyramid was built by the Egyptians in the third century B.C. and is one of the many large pyramids built to honor a deceased pharaoh. The Giza Plateau or "pyramids of Giza" in the Egyptian Valley of the Dead contains several pyramids (the Great Pyramid being the largest), several small tombs, several temples, and the Great Sphinx. The Great Pyramid was built to honor Pharaoh Khufu. Many of the smaller pyramids, tombs and temples were built to honor the women and family members of Khufu. The up-bow sign looks like a V and the down-bow sign looks like an upside-down V with the bottom missing. Above means you need to start at the point and push the bow away. Below means you need to start at the frog (where your hand holds the bow) and pull the bow towards you. An upward movement usually produces a softer sound, while a downward movement produces a louder and more assertive sound. Take the freedom to draw your own signs, but don't forget that the printed strike signs are there for musical reasons, so they usually need to be respected. A group of market women escorted Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and their two young children (Marie Therese, 11, and Louis-Charles, 4), and the king's sister, Madame Elizabeth, from Versailles to Paris on October 6, 1789. They returned to the French capital in a carriage, surrounded by jeering and threatening mobs who threatened the royal couple. The actions of the crowd forced the King and Queen to open all the windows of their coach. At one point, someone in the crowd held up the head of a royal guard who had been murdered in Versailles in front of a terrified queen. The cost of U.S. imperialism's conquest of the Philippines has been paid by the Filipino people. They were imposed on the American colonial regime to pay taxes to cover a large part of the costs and the interest on the bonds was issued through banks on Wall Street in the name of the Philippine government. American imperialism rested to a large extent on the enormous profits from the long-term exploitation of the Philippines. To understand the Templars, one must understand the context that gave rise to the order. The period in which this occurred is generally referred to as the High Middle Ages, the European history of the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries (1000-1300 A.D.). After the Early Middle Ages came the High Middle Ages, followed by the Late Middle Ages, which usually end around 1500. Technological determinism is a term for a wide range of ideas in practice: from technological offer or technological imperative to a strict feeling that human fate is driven by an underlying logic linked to scientific laws and the appearance of it in technology. Most interpretations of technological determinism share these two general assumptions: that technological development follows a trajectory that is largely beyond cultural or political influence, and that technology itself has "effects" on societies that are inherent rather than socially conditioned. For example, some will say that the arrival of the automobile automatically led to the construction of roads. However, a national road network is not economically viable for just a few cars, so new production methods are being developed to lower the cost of owning a car. Massive car ownership also leads to more accidents on the road, which has led to the development of new healthcare techniques to repair the human body. Romanticism included a large element of cultural determinism, derived from writers such as Goethe, Fichte and Schlegel. In Romanticism, geography formed the individual, and over time, habits and cultures emerged based on geography, creating a harmonious society that was better than arbitrary laws. Constantinople was seen as the fashion capital of feudal Europe, as Paris is today. From about 400 AD to 1100 AD, it was known as a center of luxury. The Byzantine Empire's status declined in the 12th century, largely due to the Crusaders returning with silk and spices that were more valuable than what the Byzantine markets could offer. Paris also took over the mantle of fashion capital from Constantinople around this time. The Gothic reached its zenith in the 10th, 11th and 14th centuries. Early clothing was strongly influenced by Byzantine culture from the east. However, due to the slow communication channels, styles in the West were about 25 to 30 years behind. At the end of the Middle Ages, a distinct style began to emerge in Western Europe. One of the biggest developments was the result of the Crusades: people began to use buttons to fasten their clothing. Sustainable agriculture is agriculture that produces enough food to meet the needs of the farmer and his family. Subsistence agriculture is a simple system that is usually biological. It uses stored seed from the ecoregion, combined with intercropping or other relatively simple techniques to maximize yields. In the past, most farmers were engaged in subsistence farming. This is still the case in many developing countries. Subcultures bring together like-minded people who feel alienated by social norms, allowing them to develop a sense of identity. Subcultures can be distinguished by age, ethnicity, social class, location and/or gender of their members. A subculture can be defined by the following qualities: linguistic, aesthetic, religious, political, sexual, geographic, or any combination of these. Members of a subculture often show which group they belong to through a particular symbolic style in what they wear, how they act, and the slang they use. One of the most commonly used methods for illustrating the importance of socialization were the few heartbreaking cases of children who were not socialized by adults due to neglect, hardship, or intentional abuse during their upbringing. They are called "wolf children" or "wild children." Some wolf children have been confined by humans (usually their own parents); sometimes the child was abandoned because the parents could not accept the child's serious mental or physical disability. Unaccompanied children may have experienced serious child abuse or serious trauma before being abandoned or running away. Others claim he was raised by animals, and some say he lived only in the wilderness. A feral child who has not been raised by humans may exhibit behavior that resembles that of the animal that cared for it (within physical limits), such as fear of or indifference toward people. Project-based learning should simplify and make education more interesting, but scaffolding goes a step further. Scaffolding is not a teaching method but a support for individuals who are experiencing a new learning experience, such as a new computer program or starting a new project. Support can be virtual or real. A professor is a form of support, but so is the Microsoft Office paperclip. Virtual scaffolding is built into the software that asks questions, provides memory cues, and explains procedures that may be difficult for students to understand on their own. There are many reasons why children end up in foster care, such as neglect, abuse and exploitation. No child should have to grow up in an environment where they are not cared for, where they are not loved and where they cannot develop, but it happens. We view the foster care system as a safe zone for these children. The purpose of foster care is to provide a safe home, loving caregivers, stable education, and reliable health care. In foster care, all needs that were neglected in the previous home must be met. The internet combines elements of interpersonal and mass communication. The different characters of the Internet lead to new dimensions in the application of the Uses & Gratifications theory. Learning and socialization, for example, are often cited as important reasons to use the Internet (James et al., 1995). Eighmey and McCord (1998) introduced new motivation aspects such as "personal involvement" and "sustained relationships" when they studied audience reactions to websites. The use of video recordings led to surprising findings in the interpretation of micro-expressions, which are facial movements that last only a few milliseconds. Specifically, it is argued that no one can detect a lie based on micro-expressions alone. Oliver Sacks described in his essay The President's Speech how people who cannot understand speech due to brain damage can nonetheless accurately assess its sincerity. He even suggested that other animals, such as dogs, also possess the ability to interpret human behavior. Research in the 20th century has shown that there are two genetic variants: hidden and visible. By mutation, new genetic variation is added; by selection, this variation is eliminated from the pool of expressed variation. For each generation, recombination and segregation are used to vary between the two groups. A primate with a digestive system similar to that of humans would have difficulty obtaining the necessary amino acids from the plant-based sources available on the savanna. Furthermore, it can have serious consequences: growth retardation, malnutrition and ultimately death. The easiest to find plant sources of protein are the proteins in leaves and legumes, but unless they are cooked, they are difficult for primates like us to digest. Not only is animal food (ants, termites, eggs) easily digestible, but it also contains a lot of proteins that contain all essential amino acids. All in all, we should not be surprised if our ancestors solved their "protein problem" in the same way that chimpanzees in the savanna solve it today. Sleep interruption means waking up for a reason during your normal sleep period and falling back asleep within 10 to 60 minutes. This is fairly easy to do by using a relatively gentle alarm clock that brings you back to consciousness without making you fully awake. If you put your alarm clock on your nightstand, you can place it on the other side of the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Other options based on the circadian rhythm include drinking a lot of fluid before bed (water or tea, a well-known diuretic), which will make you have to get up to go to the bathroom. The amount of inner calm a person has compared to the amount of stress they carry in their body and mind. The less stress, the more life force present. Every person is capable of achieving total contentment and relaxation. Everyone can lighten their spirit. Only their own stress and negativity stand in the way. Tibetan Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha, but has been expanded to include the Mahayana path of love and many Indian yoga techniques. Tibetan Buddhism consists of a relatively simple core of kundalini yoga, meditation, and following universal love. Through yoga poses, breathing exercises, mantras and visualized images, Kundalini yoga (enlightenment energy) is awakened. The essence of Tibetan meditation is yoga with a deity as the focus. Through visualization of various deities, energy channels are cleansed, chakras are activated, and consciousness is brought into an enlightened state. Because Germany was a common enemy during World War II, cooperation between the USSR and the U.S. was established. After the war, the conflicts between system, process, and culture resulted in the countries being at odds with each other. Two years after the end of the war, the former allies were at loggerheads, marking the beginning of the Cold War. The war would last 40 years and proxy wars would be fought on battlefields in Africa, Asia, Afghanistan, Cuba and many other places. The Polish defensive forces held out until September 17, 1939, when they had to retreat and reorganize along the bridgehead in Romania. However, these plans were thwarted overnight when 800,000 Red Army troops from the Soviet Union invaded and formed the Latvian and Ukrainian fronts after occupying eastern Poland, in violation of the Riga Peace Treaty, the Soviet-Polish Non-Aggression Pact, and other international peace treaties, both bilateral and multilateral. Shipping is the most efficient way to move large numbers of people and goods across the oceans. Traditionally, the role of the navy is to ensure that a country has the ability to move people and goods, while denying the enemy the ability to move people and goods. The U.S. tried to get men and materiel across the Atlantic to the Brits and the North Atlantic Campaign of WWII is one of the most notable recent examples. Meanwhile, the German navy was trying to stop the traffic with the help of mainly U-boats. Like the rest of Europe, Britain would probably have fallen into German hands if the Allies had failed. It seems that goats were first domesticated about 10,000 years ago in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. In ancient times, cultures and peoples began to domesticate them so that they would always have easy access to their meat, milk, and hides. Domesticated goats were usually kept in herds on a hillside or other grazing land and guarded by goat-herders, just as shepherds are often accompanied by a child or young person. This method of herding is still used today. Horse-drawn roads were built in England as early as the 16th century. Even though horse-drawn railways consisted of little more than a plank rail, the horses had to run faster and pull heavier loads than they did on the roads of the time. Cross ties were used fairly early on to hold the rails in place, but eventually it was realized that rails would be more efficient if they had an iron point at the top. This soon became common practice, but the iron resulted in more wear on the wooden cart wheels. Iron wheels eventually replaced wooden ones. In 1767, the first all-iron rails were laid. The first form of transport we know of is walking. Humans began walking upright two million years ago when the Homo Erectus appeared (meaning upright man). Their predecessor, the Australopithecus, walked less upright. Two-legged specialisations have been found in fossils of the Australopithecus dating back 4.2 to 3.9 million years. The Sahelanthropus may have walked upright seven million years ago. We can live more environmentally-friendly lives, join an environmental movement, or even take action to mitigate future suffering. It's often just a symptomatic treatment. But if we want more than a temporary solution, we need to identify the root cause of the problem and get rid of it. Humanity's scientific and technological advancements have indisputably changed the Earth. In addition, overpopulation and an extravagant human lifestyle have exacerbated the problems. After the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on July 4, a handwritten copy was sent to John Dunlap's printing office a few blocks away. It was signed by President of the Continental Congress John Hancock and Secretary of State Charles Thomson. Between 150 and 200 copies were made overnight, which are now known as "Dunlap broadsides." John Nixon gave the first public reading of the document in the garden of Independence Hall on July 8. One copy was sent to George Washington on July 6 and read to his troops in New York on July 9. Another copy arrived in London on August 10. The 25 Dunlap broadsides are the oldest surviving copies of the document. The original handwritten copy did not survive. Many paleontologists believe dinosaurs still exist today. We call them birds. Many people don't consider them dinosaurs because they have feathers and can fly. But there are a lot of things about birds that still look like dinosaurs. They have claws and scales on their feet, lay eggs and walk on their hind legs, just like the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Manipulating binary-coded data forms the basis of virtually all computers used today. A binary number can only have two values, 0 or 1, and these numbers are called binary digits (or "bits" in computer parlance). Internal poisoning may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms such as vomiting are so common that a diagnosis cannot be made immediately. The presence of open bottles of medicines or poisonous household chemicals is the best indication of internal poisoning. See the label for specific EHBO instructions for that specific antidote. These insects are formally called "bugs" by entomologists. The term comes from an ancient agreement with bedbugs, which are insects that are very good at parasitizing humans. Both red imported fire ants and harvester ants are nest-bound and have adapted to living in the nests or houses of their hosts. In the U.S., there are about 400,000 known cases of multiple sclerosis (MS), making it the leading neurological disease in adults of both younger and middle age. MS is a disease that affects the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. Research has shown that women are twice as likely to develop MS as men. A couple may decide that it is not in their or their child's best interest to raise a baby. These mothers can choose to give their baby up for adoption. In an adoption, the parents give up their parental rights so that another couple can raise the child. Discovering how the world works through the scientific method is the most important goal of science. This method is the guideline for most scientific research. However, it is more than just testing; a test is a means of disproving one or more potential hypotheses, placing question marks and observations as a guide for scientific research. Naturalists and philosophers focused on classical texts, especially the Bible in Latin. Aristotle's views on science, including psychology, were accepted. The West was losing interest in Greek philosophy and science as knowledge of Greek declined. In physiological and behavioral observations of rhythms, there is often a strong dependence on endogenous processes and the production of the biological clock. Most organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, exhibit circadian rhythms that are not simply responses to external periodic signals. Biological clocks are self-sustaining oscillators that undergo a cycle for a given period of time, even in the absence of external signals. Hershey and Chase's experiment was one of the most important indications that DNA was a genetic material. Hershey and Chase used bacteriophages or viruses to implant their own DNA into a bacterium. Two experiments were conducted. In one, the DNA in the faag was marked with radioactive phosphorus, and in the other, the protein of the faag was marked with radioactive sulfur. Mutations can have many different effects, depending on the type, the importance of the affected genetic material, and whether the affected cells are neurons. Only mutations in mitochondrial DNA are inherited. Other mutations can cause cells to die or cause cancer. Nature tourism attracts people who like to visit natural areas to enjoy the scenery, including the flora and fauna. Activities include hunting, fishing, photography, bird watching, visiting parks and studying the ecosystem. An example is visiting, photographing and learning about orangutans in Borneo. Every morning, people from small towns drive to their workplaces, passing people whose workplaces are located in the town they just left. Everyone in this dynamic transport shuttle is in some way connected to and supports a transport system based on private cars. Science shows that this enormous carbon economy has pushed the biosphere out of its stable state, which allowed human evolution to take place over the past two million years. Everyone participates in society and uses transport systems, and almost everyone complains about them. In developed countries, problems with water quality or collapsing bridges are rare. Why is there so much complaint about transport systems? Why does it go wrong every day? Are transport technicians just incompetent? Or is it something more fundamental? Traffic flow looks at the movements of individual drivers and vehicles between two points and the interactions between the individuals. Unfortunately, it is difficult to study traffic flow because driver behavior cannot be predicted with 100 percent certainty. Fortunately, well-behaved drivers are predictable. This means that traffic flows exhibit some degree of consistency, and that there is something to be said mathematically. Three core characteristics have been linked to traffic flow: (1) intensity, (2) density, and (3) speed. These relationships facilitate the planning, design, and construction of transportation infrastructure. Insects were the first animals to fly, giving them an advantage in escaping predators and finding food and mates more efficiently. The advantage of most insects is that they can fold their wings along their body. This allows them to hide in a greater number of small places from predators. Currently, only dragonflies and damselflies are unable to fold their wings. About 2,000 years ago, Aristarchus said the solar system revolved around the sun. There were some people who thought he was right, but most people thought the opposite; that the Sun moved around the Earth, and the Sun (and other stars) moved with it. That makes sense, doesn't it? You don't feel the Earth moving, do you? The Amazon is the world's largest and second-longest river and carries more than eight times as much water as the second-largest. The Amazon is also the widest river in the world, with widths of up to six miles in some places. At least 20 percent of the water that flows into the sea from rivers comes from the Amazon. The main flow of the Amazon River is 6,387 kilometers (3,980 miles) long. The water comes from thousands of smaller rivers. Despite the construction of stone pyramids continuing until the end of the Old Kingdom, the pyramids of Giza remain unsurpassed in size and technical sophistication of construction. The ancient Egyptians of the New Kingdom admired the monument of their predecessors, which was already more than 1,000 years old. Approximately 800 people live in Vatican City, which is the smallest independent country in the world and also the country with the lowest population. Italian is the official language of Vatican City for official communications and laws. Italian is the most widely spoken language by those who work there, while Latin is used for religious ceremonies. Everyone who lives in Vatican City is Roman Catholic. People have known the most basic chemical elements, such as gold, silver, and copper, since ancient times, because they are all found in nature and are relatively easy to mine using primitive tools. Philosopher Aristotle speculated that everything is made up of one or more of four elements: earth, water, air and fire. It seemed more like what we know of the four states of matter (in the same order): solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, but he has also theorized that they form new substances to become what we see. Alloys are simply a combination of at least two metals. As you know, the periodic table contains many elements. Elements such as calcium and potassium are metals. There are also metals such as silver and gold. Alloys can also contain small amounts of non-metals, such as carbon. Everything in the universe is made of matter. Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms are so incredibly small that a trillion of them would fit in the period at the end of this sentence. That's why the pencil became a trusted friend to many when it was launched. Unfortunately, the pen has been downgraded in status with the advent of newer writing methods and is used much less. Today, we write messages on a computer screen without ever needing a typewriter. You can ask what's going to happen to the keyboard once something new comes out. The atomic bomb works on the principle that it takes energy to assemble a nucleus with many protons and neutrons. As if you're pushing a heavy car up a hill. When the core splits, some of the energy is released. Some atoms have unstable nuclei, which means they fall apart at the slightest provocation. The moon's surface is characterized by dust and rock. The crust is the outermost layer of the moon. The crust is about 70 km (43 mi) thick on the near side and 100 km (62 mi) thick on the far side. The crust is thinner under the maria and thicker under the high plains. There may be more maria on the side, because the crust is thinner there, allowing lava to reach the surface more easily. Content theories seek to understand what motivates people and what appeals to them. This theory suggests that people have certain needs and/or desires that are internalized as they mature. With these theories, they hope to understand why certain people want certain things and what environmental factors influence them to do or not do certain things. Two popular content theories are Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory. In general, there are two approaches managers can take when leading their former peers. One approach is to try to be on equal footing. This type of manager finds it difficult to make unpopular decisions and disciplinary actions, conduct evaluations, delegate, and hold people accountable. At the other end of the spectrum, it transforms him or her into an unrecognizable individual. He or she feels the need to change everything the team has done, and wants to make it all his or her own. Ultimately, the leader is responsible for the team's success or failure. This behavior often leads to a chasm between leaders and team members. Virtual teams must meet the same standards of excellence as regular teams, although there are some differences. In most cases, virtual team members are the first point of contact for their direct physical group. They are often more independent than traditional team members. That's because their teams can meet in different time zones, which may not be understood by their local management. The concept of an "invisible team" (Larson and LaFasto, 1989, pp 109) is a unique element of a virtual team. The "invisible team" is the management team to whom each member reports. The invisible team also sets the standard for each member. Why would an organization want to embark on the time-consuming process of setting up a learning organization? One of the goals of implementing organizational learning concepts is innovation. Creativity and ingenuity come to the fore when all the available resources within the functional departments of an organization are effectively deployed. The result of this is that the process of an organization working together to overcome an obstacle can lead to a new innovative process to meet customer needs. To foster innovation in an organization, management must create a culture that encourages innovating, sharing knowledge, and learning organizationally. According to Angel (2006), organizations perform better with a continuous improvement approach. Neurobiological data provide physical evidence for a theoretical approach to studying cognition. This allows the research area to be narrowed and more precise data to be collected. The correlation between brain pathology and behavior helps scientists in their research. It has long been known that various types of brain injury, trauma, wounds and tumors can affect behavior and lead to changes in mental ability. Because there are more and more new technologies, we are learning more and more about the structures and processes in the brain. This provides us with a lot of information and material to develop simulation models that will give us more insight into the processes of our mind. Most people associate AI with science fiction, but it is also an essential part of computer science. It is used in research on machine behavior, learning, and intelligent adaptation. Developing machines to automate tasks that require intelligent behavior falls under the umbrella of AI research. Examples include management, planning, the ability to diagnose and answer customer questions, and recognition of handwriting, voice and face. These have become separate disciplines for finding solutions to real-world problems. Today, this system of artificial intelligence is widely used in economic, medical, technological, and military fields, such as in various software applications for PCs and video games. Many field trips are planned for each class. Often a teacher would take her students to places where a bus ride is not an option. Thanks to technological advances, virtual field trips are now possible. This allows students to view artifacts in a museum from their classroom, peek into an aquarium, or see beautiful works of art. Sharing a virtual excursion is also a great way to look back on a trip and share experiences with future classes. Students at Bennet School in North Carolina, for example, design a website each year about their trip to the state capital, which is redesigned each year and whose previous versions are archived online to serve as a scrapbook. Blogs can also help students write better. Often their grammar and spelling is poor at first, but improves quickly because they have an audience. Because students are often the most critical audience, the blogger strives to improve his writing to avoid criticism. Blogging also forces students to learn more about the world around them. The need to keep the audience interested inspires students to be smart and interesting (Toto, 2004). Blogging is a tool that inspires collaboration and encourages students to extend learning beyond the traditional school day. Used properly, blogs can help learners develop analytical skills and critical thinking; by actively engaging in discussion on the Internet, learners can find their own place in the context of other people's material and at the same time establish their own position on certain issues (Oravec, 2002). The bilingual capital of Canada is the charming Ottawa, home to art galleries and museums that showcase Canada's past and future. Further south, you'll find the Niagara Falls. To the north, you'll find the pristine Muskoka and more. Things like this make Ontario seem quintessentially Canadian to outsiders. Further north, large areas are sparsely populated and some of these areas are virtually uninhabited wilderness. A population comparison that will surprise many: there are more African-Americans in the United States than the total population of Canada. The East African islands lie along the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar is by far the largest and in terms of fauna it is almost a separate continent. Most of the smaller islands are independent countries or are associated with France and are known for their luxury beach resorts. The Arabs also brought Islam with them, which spread widely across the Comoros and Mayotte. Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route from Europe to India, which marked the beginning of European influence and colonization in the 15th century. The region borders the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west and the Sahel to the north. Women: Female travelers are advised to say they are married, even if they are not. It also helps to wear rings (not too expensive-looking rings). Women need to be aware that cultural differences can lead to behavior that they find intimidating, such as being followed, touched on the arm, etc. Be clear when you reject a man and don't be afraid to stand up for your man (cultural differences don't play well here!). The modern city of Casablanca was founded in the 10th century BC by Berber fishermen. The city was used as a strategic port by the Phoenicians, Romans and Merinids and was known as Anfa. The Portuguese destroyed the harbor and rebuilt it under the name Casa Branca. After an earthquake in 1755, they left the city again. The sultan of Morocco rebuilt the city and named it Daru l-Bayad. The Spanish traders who established their base here called it Casablanca. Casablanca is one of the least interesting places to shop in Morocco. Around the old Medina, there are many places where you can buy traditional Moroccan items, such as tagines, pots, leather products, water pipes and other trinkets, but it is very much geared towards tourists. Goma is a tourist city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located in the far eastern part of the country, near Rwanda. In 2002, Goma was devastated when the Nyiragongo volcano erupted, burying most of the city's streets, especially the downtown area. Although Goma itself is relatively safe, you should check the security situation in North Kivu province before traveling outside Goma. The city also serves as a base for climbing the Nyiragongo volcano and is home to some of the most affordable gorilla trekking trips in Africa. A boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) can take you to Goma. The normal (local) price is about 500 Congolese francs for the short ride. The word "Timbuktu" is relatively inaccessible and is now used as a metaphor for exotic, far-off lands. Today, Timbuktu is an impoverished city, but its reputation makes it a tourist attraction and it has an airport. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1990 due to desert storms. It was one of the key stops on the PBS special "African American World" hosted by Henry Louis Gates. The city differs from other cities in the country in that it has a more Arab than African feel. The Kruger National Park (KNP) is located in northeastern South Africa and borders Mozambique to the east, Zimbabwe to the north, and the Crocodile River to the south. The park covers an area of 19,500 square kilometers, divided into 14 different eco-zones, where various wildlife species are kept. As a major tourist attraction in South Africa, this park is the flagship of the South African National Parks (SANParks). As with all South African national parks, daily maintenance fees and entry fees apply. It can also be handy to buy a Wild Card. These offer access to certain parts of parks in South Africa or access to all national parks in South Africa. The entire territory of Hong Kong is named after the island of Hong Kong, which is a popular tourist destination. The large number of buildings that make up the skyline of Hong Kong has been likened to a glittering stick chart that is visible due to the waters of Victoria Harbour. For the best view of Hong Kong, leave the island and head to the waterfront of Kowloon on the other side. The vast majority of Hong Kong's population lives very densely on reclaimed land along the northern coast. This is where the British colonists settled, so if you're looking for evidence of the area's colonial past, this is a good place to start. The Sundarbans are the largest mangrove forests in the world, stretching 80 km (50 miles) inland from the coast into Indian and Bangladeshi territory. The Sundarbans have now been officially inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The Indian portion is known as the Sundarbans National Park. However, the forests are more than just mangrove swamps - they also contain some of the last powerful stretches of jungle that once covered the Gangetic plain. The Sundarbans covers an area of 3,850 km², of which a third is swamp and marsh. The Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary since 1966 and are now home to an estimated 400 Bengal tigers and about 30,000 spotted deer. Daytime buses depart from the station on the border of the districts (across the river). Most depart between 6.30am and 7.30am, heading east and to Jakar/Bumthang. It's a good idea to buy tickets in advance, as the local buses are often fully booked. Most neighborhoods are served by small Japanese Coaster buses that are comfortable and rugged. Shared taxis can quickly and comfortably take you to nearby places like Paro (150 ngultrum) and Punakha (200 ngultrum). The Oyapock Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Oyapock River to connect the Brazilian city of Oiapoque with the French Guyanese city of Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock. The two towers are 83 metres high. The building is 378 metres long and has two entrances measuring 3.5 metres wide. Under the bridge, the clearance is 50 feet. Construction of the bridge was completed in August 2011, but it did not open to traffic until March 2017. According to the plan, the bridge will be fully operational in September 2017, with Brazilian customs posts ready for use. The Guaraní were the most prominent indigenous group. They lived in what is now eastern Paraguay, were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, and also practiced subsistence agriculture. In the province of Chaco, other indigenous peoples lived, including the Guaycurú and Payaguá, who hunted, fished, and gathered their food. Paraguay, formerly known as the "Great Province of India," was founded in the 16th century when Spanish colonists encountered the indigenous population. It was followed by a three-century period of Spanish colonization. Asunción was founded in 1537 and since then Paraguay has managed to preserve much of its indigenous character and identity. Argentina is known for having one of the best polo teams and players in the world. The biggest tournament of the year takes place on the polo fields in Las Cañitas in December. There are also smaller tournaments and matches at other times of the year. Visit the Argentine Polo Association for more information on tournaments and buying tickets for polo matches. The official currency of the Falkland Islands is the Falkland Islands pound (FKP). It is worth about one British pound (GBP). There is only one bank on the islands, in Stanley opposite FIC West, where you can exchange money. In general, British pounds are accepted everywhere on the islands, and in Stanley you can also pay with credit cards and U.S. dollars. On remote islands, you may not be able to pay by credit card, but you may be able to pay in British or American currency. Ask the owners in advance how you can pay. Change your money back before you leave the islands, as Falkland currency is very difficult to exchange outside the islands. Montevideo is below the equator, so when it's summer there, it's winter on the northern hemisphere and vice versa. Montevideo is located in the subtropics, with summer temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Winter can be deceptively cold: temperatures rarely dip below freezing, but the combination of wind and humidity makes it feel colder than the thermometer indicates. Rainfall levels remain fairly constant throughout the year, with no discernible "wet" and "dry" periods. Many of the animals in the park are accustomed to seeing people, but wild animals are still wild and should not be fed or disturbed. Keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from all other wildlife in the park. Deer, bison, elk, bears, and just about every other large animal can attack you, no matter how tame they seem. Each year, dozens of visitors are injured because they get too close. These animals are large, wild, and potentially dangerous, so give them their space. Also be aware that scents attract bears and other wildlife, so avoid wearing or cooking scented food and keep your campsite clean. Samoa's capital is Apia, a city of nearly 40,000 on the island of Upolu. Apia was founded around 1850 and has been the official capital of Samoa since 1959. In 1889, seven ships from Germany, the U.S. and Great Britain refused to leave the harbor, which came to be known as the infamous standoff. With the exception of a British battleship, all ships were sunk. Nearly 200 Americans and Germans lost their lives. In the independence struggle led by the Mau movement, the highest leader, Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III, was killed at a peaceful rally in the city. There are many beaches, especially due to Auckland's two harbours. The most popular are located in three areas. The beaches of North Shore in the North Harbour district stretch from north to south along the Great Ocean, from Long Bay to Devonport. These are almost all sandy beaches where swimming is safe and most have pohutukawa trees for shade. At Waitemata's harbour, in the luxury suburbs of Mission Bay and St Heliers, located in Central Auckland, you'll find Tamaki Drive beaches. These family beaches are sometimes crowded and have a good selection of shops on the coast. Swimming is not dangerous. Number One is the most important local beer that is not a complex beer, but is pleasant and refreshing. The other local beer is called Manta. There are many French wines, but New Zealand and Australian wines may be better suited for travel. Local tap water is safe to drink, but bottled water is also easy to find if you don't trust it. A "flat white" is a strange concept for Australians. Black coffee is "espresso", cappuccino has a lot of milk (without foam) and tea is served without milk. The hot chocolate milk is of Belgian quality. Fruit juices are expensive but great. There are year-round trips to the reef, and injuries from those trips are rare. Nonetheless, seek expert advice and follow all signs and safety warnings. Box jellyfish are found from October to April in the vicinity of beaches and river mouths north of Town of 1770. They can also be found outside of this period. Sharks do exist, but they rarely attack humans. Most sharks are afraid of humans and would swim away. The main habitat of saltwater crocodiles is in the river mouths north of Rockhampton and they normally do not live in the ocean. Pre-booking provides peace of mind for the traveller, knowing they have somewhere to sleep when they arrive at their destination. Travel agencies often have deals with certain hotels, but you can usually book other accommodations, such as a campground, through a travel agency. Travel agencies often offer packages that include breakfast and transportation to and from the airport, as well as packages that include flights and hotels. They can also hold your reservation if you want to think about the offer for a little longer or if you need to obtain documents for your destination (e.g. a visa). If you have a request or want to make a change, you must do so through your travel agency, not the hotel. For some festivals, the majority of attendees at music festivals choose to camp on-site and consider it an important part of the experience. If you want to be close to the action, you'll need to get a campsite close to the music. And remember this: even if the music on the main stage is over, there may still be music playing elsewhere on the festival site until the wee hours of the morning. Some festivals have special camping areas for families with young children. Keep an eye on where your hat is when crossing the Baltic in winter, as the ice crossing makes a huge racket if you're too close. Cruises to St. Petersburg include time to explore the city. Passengers on the cruise are exempt from visa requirements (check conditions). Casinos typically strive to maximize the time and money spent by their guests. Windows and clocks are usually absent, and exits can be difficult to find. They usually have special offers on food, drink and entertainment to keep them in a good mood and to prevent them from leaving. Some locations offer free alcoholic drinks. However, when people are drunk, it affects their judgement and all seasoned gamblers know how important it is to stay sober. If you are going into the mountains or over mountain passes, be aware that snow or ice may be on the road and the temperature can be extremely low. On icy and snowy roads, there is little friction and it drives differently than asphalt. During snowstorms, enough snow can fall in a very short period of time to get stuck. Poor visibility can also be caused by falling or blowing snow, condensation or ice on the windshield of the vehicle. On the other hand, ice and snow are normal in many countries and do not impede traffic. Africa's top tourist attraction is safari, which for many visitors is the highlight of their trip. In popular usage, safari refers to travel over land to see Africa's magnificent wildlife, especially on the savanna. Some animals, such as elephants and giraffes, often come close to cars, and a standard setup provides a good view. If you want to see lions, cheetahs, and leopards, you'll need binoculars. Without them, the chances of seeing them are slim. A hiking safari (also known as a "forest walk" or "loopsafari") involves walking for several hours or days in a row. The Paralympics will be held from August 24 to September 5, 2021. Some events will be held at other locations in Japan. Tokyo will be the only Asian city to have hosted the Olympics twice, having done so in 1964. If you had already booked flights and accommodation for 2020 before the delay was announced, you could be in a sticky situation. Cancellation policies vary, but most coronavirus-based cancellation policies are no longer valid as of March 31, 2020, when the Olympics were scheduled. Most event tickets are expected to cost between ¥2,500 and ¥130,000, with regular tickets costing around ¥7,000. You can dry damp clothes by ironing them. Many hotels have an iron and ironing board available. You can usually borrow them, even if they are not in the room. If you don't have a brush or don't want to wear creased socks, you can, if available, use a hair dryer. Ensure the fabric is not too hot (this can cause the fabric to shrink or, in extreme cases, burn). There are several ways to purify water. Some methods are effective against specific risks. In some areas it is sufficient to boil water for one minute, in other areas it must be boiled for several minutes. Not all filters are equally effective. If in doubt, drink the best water from a sealed bottle from a reputable company. Travelers may encounter pests that are not native to their home country. Pests can contaminate food, cause irritation or, in the worst case, cause allergic reactions, spread poison or transmit infections. Usually, infectious diseases, or dangerous animals that injure or kill people, are not considered pests. Tax-free shopping refers to the ability to purchase goods at certain locations that are exempt from taxes and duties. Travellers going to countries with high taxes can sometimes save a lot of money on products such as alcohol and tobacco. Point Marion and Fairmont are connected by the Buffalo-to-Pittsburgh highway, which means you're often driving through desolate backcountry, which makes this route a big challenge. Are you not used to driving on country lanes? Keep your wits about you. There are a lot of steep hills, narrow lanes and sharp bends. The posted speed limits are noticeably lower than in previous and subsequent areas -- usually 35-40 mph (56-64 km/h) -- and it's even more important to watch your speed here. Surprisingly, you have much more range here than in other parts of the route, such as the Pennsylvania Wilds. German baking tastes great, and Bavarian baking is rich and varied, just like its southern neighbor, Austria. You see a lot of fruit cakes. All year round they contain apples, but in the summer months they also contain cherries and plums. Many popular German baked goods contain almonds, hazelnuts and other nuts, and taste great with a cup of strong coffee. If you're looking for a few small but mighty treats, try some Berliner, Pfannkuchen, or Krapfen. To make a curry, you need spicy and pungent ingredients in combination with vegetables or meat. Depending on the amount of liquid, a curry can be "dry" or "wet." In northern India and Pakistan, yogurt is often used in curries; in southern India and some other coastal regions of the subcontinent, coconut milk is often used. Indonesian cuisine encompasses dishes from 17,000 islands and is an umbrella term for a variety of regional cuisines throughout the country. But without additional information, the term refers to the food that originated in the central and eastern part of the main island of Java. Today, the Javanese cuisine is available throughout the archipelago and offers a variety of simple spiced dishes. The most common Javanese flavorings are nuts, peppers, sugar (especially Javanese coconut sugar) and various aromatic herbs. Stirrups support the rider's feet and hang down on either side of the saddle. They provide the rider with more stability, but can also cause safety issues as the rider's feet can get stuck in them. If a rider is bucked off but their foot is caught in the stirrup, they can be dragged along with the horse. To reduce the risk, a number of safety measures have been put in place. Most riders start out with riding boots with a heel and a smooth, narrow sole. Some saddles, especially English saddles, have safety buckles. This allows the stirrup leathers to release from the saddle if the rider falls off the horse while pulling back on the reins. Cochamó Valley - This is the most popular climbing destination in Chile. It is known as the Yosemite of South America and has many different large granite walls and rocks. The peaks offer awe-inspiring views. Climbers from all over the world continue to discover new routes on the rock faces, which seem to have endless potential. Winter sports that involve descending, such as skiing and snowboarding, are very popular. You glide down a slope covered in snow with skis or a snowboard attached to your feet. Skiing is a popular recreational activity with many enthusiasts, who are sometimes called "ski bums" because they plan entire vacations around skiing at a particular location. Skiing has been around for a very long time - there are cave paintings of skiers dating back to 5000 B.C.! The origins of skiing date back to at least the 17th century and in 1861 the first recreational ski resort in Australia was opened by Norwegians. Backcountry skiing: this activity is also known as off-piste skiing, ski touring or ski hiking. It's not exactly the same, but it's like alpine skiing or mountaineering, which is done on steep terrain. You need stiffer skis and boots for that. You can think of the ski route as a hiking trail. In good conditions, you can cover greater distances than on foot, but it's rare that you can match the speed of cross-country skiing without a heavy backpack. Europe is a relatively small continent, but with many independent countries. Normally, travelers must apply for multiple visas and undergo passport controls when traveling between different countries. The Schengen area operates in this area almost as one country. As long as you are in this zone, you can usually cross the border without having to go through passport control again. If you have a Schengen visa, you do not need to apply for a separate visa for each Schengen country, which saves time, money and paperwork. There is no universal definition of what constitutes an antique. Some customs authorities consider goods to be antique if they are more than 100 years old. The definition varies by location. In North America, for example, the age limit is lower than in Europe. It is possible to mark handmade products as antiques, even though they are newer than comparable mass-produced products. For the Sámi, reindeer herding is an important form of livelihood. The culture around the trade is also very important to many with other occupations. However, even traditionally, not all Sámi were involved in large-scale reindeer herding. They engaged in fishing, hunting, and the like, and reindeer were mostly used as pack animals. Many Sámi work in modern professions today. Tourism is a major source of income in Sápmi, the Sámi homeland. The word "gypsy" is often used by non-Roma, but it is also often considered derogatory due to its associations with negative stereotypes and false perceptions of the Roma. If there is a travel advisory in place for the country you are travelling to, this may affect your travel insurance for the trip or your cancellation insurance. In addition to your own government's advice, you can also seek advice from other governments. However, their advice is directed at their own citizens. Americans in the Middle East, for example, may be confronted with different situations than Europeans or Arabs. Advice is limited to a brief summary of the political situation in a single country. They are often brief, general, and simplistic in comparison to other, more detailed sources. Extreme weather is the general term for any dangerous weather that can lead to damage, serious disruption or loss of life. Extreme weather can occur anywhere in the world. There are different types of extreme weather, which vary based on geography, topography, and atmospheric conditions. The effects and consequences of severe weather include heavy winds, hail, large amounts of precipitation and forest fires, but also thunderstorms, tornadoes, flash floods and hurricanes. Examples of regional and seasonal extreme weather events include blizzards, ice storms and dust storms. Travelers are advised to be aware of the risks associated with severe weather in their area, as it may affect some travel plans. Anyone visiting a country that is considered a war zone should be professionally trained. A search for "cursus in hostile environments" on the internet is likely to return the address of a local business. In a course, these issues are usually covered in more detail, often in conjunction with practical experience. A course usually lasts two to five days and consists of role-playing, lots of first aid and occasional weapons training. There are many books and magazines with articles on survival in the wilderness, but very few on war zones. Travellers planning a gender reassignment surgery overseas should ensure they have the right documentation for their return journey. It varies greatly, or governments want to issue passports with no gender (X) listed, or to change a name or gender on documents. There is just as much difference in the willingness of foreign governments to recognize these documents. Security screenings have also become much more extensive since September 11, 2001. Transgender individuals who have not undergone surgery can assume that they will not be treated with undiminished privacy and dignity by this scan. Rip currents are the return flow of waves that break on a reef or similar structure and flow back onto the beach. Because of the underwater topography, the return flow is confined to a few deeper areas where a fast return to deep water can occur. Most deaths are due to exhaustion from trying to swim against the current, which would be impossible. When you get out of the strong current, it's time to swim back. Try to get to a place where you won't be grabbed again. Depending on your skills and whether you're noticed, you can also wait for help. The return shock is worse than the culture shock (you have less of a "honeymoon" feeling), it lasts longer, and it can be more intense. Travelers who adapt easily to new cultures often find it difficult to re-adapt to their own culture. If you have lived abroad and then returned, you have adapted to the new culture and lost some of the habits of your own culture. Back in the day, when you traveled abroad, people were patient and understanding. They understood that travelers had to adapt to a new country. Usually, patience and understanding is not expected for travelers returning home. For kids, the light and sound show at the pyramid is one of the most interesting things to do in the area. You see the pyramids in the dark and you see them in silence before the show starts. Often, the sounds of vendors and tourists are always audible. The story of light and sound seems like a book. The Sphinx is the backdrop and the narrator of a long story. The scenes are projected onto the pyramids and the rest of the pyramids are illuminated. The Southern Shetland Islands were discovered in 1819 and have since been claimed by various countries, with 16 active bases in 2020. The archipelago is located 75 miles (120 km) north of the mainland. The largest island is King George Island with the settlement of Villa Las Estrellas. Others are Livingston Island, and Deception. Here you'll find the caldera of an active volcano serving as a spectacular natural harbor. Ellsworth lies on the southern side of the peninsula, bordering Bellingshausen Sea. Here the mountains of the peninsula give way to the plateau, then re-emerge to form the 360-mile-long Mount Ellsworth Range, which is crossed by the Minnesota Glacier. The northern part, also known as the Sentinel Range, includes the highest mountains in Antarctica, Vinson Massif. Mount Vinson, at 4,892 metres (16,050 ft), is the highest peak. A satellite phone may be your only option in remote locations where there is no cell phone reception. A satellite phone is not a replacement for a mobile phone, as you have to be outside with a clear view of the satellite to make a call. This service is often used by the shipping industry, including pleasure craft, and expeditions where external data and communications are required. Your local telephone provider can give you more information on how to connect to this service. It is becoming increasingly popular for people planning a gap year to travel and learn. In particular, school leavers use it to take a gap year before university without affecting their qualifications. Often, an application to study abroad during a gap year can increase your chances of returning to higher education in your own country. Normally, tuition fees are required for enrollment in these educational programs. Finland is a fantastic sailing destination. The "Land van duizend meren" has thousands of islands, in the lakes and in the archipelagos offshore. A yacht is not necessary for the archipelagos or lakes. The coastal archipelagos and the largest lakes are indeed large enough for any yacht, but with smaller boats or even a kayak you get a completely different experience. In Finland, so many people spend their free time boating that the ratio of boats to people is one to seven or eight. It is the same as Norway, Sweden and New Zealand. It is also unique (in the Netherlands, for example, it is one in 40). Most Baltic cruises include an extended stay in St. Petersburg, Russia. You can spend several full days in the historic town and sleep on the ship. Since 2009, you do not need a separate visa if you go ashore alone on a boat excursion. Some cruises include a visit to Berlin, but as you can see on the map, Berlin is not close to the sea. A visit to the city is not included in the price of the cruise. Flying can be stressful for people of all backgrounds and ages, especially if they have never flown before or have had a traumatic experience. It's nothing to be ashamed of: it's no different from many fears that other people have. Knowing how planes work can contribute to overcoming a fear of the unknown or lack of control over the plane. Couriers are paid handsomely to deliver items quickly. For business documents, merchandise or spare parts for emergency repairs, time is often of the essence. Larger companies were able to use their own planes for certain routes, but for other routes and smaller companies it was more difficult. If they are shipping things by air, it can take days for them to be unloaded and cleared through customs. Only checked baggage could be processed more quickly, according to airline regulations, and you are the accompanying passenger. The most obvious way to fly first or business class is to pay for it (or better yet, have your employer pay for it). However, it's not cheap: the rule of thumb is that you pay about four times as much for business class as you do for economy, and about 11 times as much for first class. It rarely makes sense to look for discounts on business class or first class tickets on direct flights from A to B. Airlines know all too well that there is a group of flyers who are willing to pay a lot of money to get somewhere quickly and comfortably, and they price accordingly. Chişinău is the capital of Moldova. The Romanian language is predominantly spoken here, but Russian is also widely spoken. As a multi-ethnic republic, Moldova was wracked by an ethnic conflict. In 1994, this conflict led to the establishment of the self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria in eastern Moldova. The republic has its own government and currency, but is not recognized by the U.N. members. Economic ties have been re-established between the two parts of Moldova, despite the failure of political negotiations. Orthodox Christianity is the main religion in Moldova. İzmir is the third-largest city in Turkey with a population of about 3.7 million, the second-largest port after Istanbul and a good transport hub. The once ancient city of İzmir is now a modern, developed and bustling commercial center on a bay surrounded by mountains. The wide boulevards, the glass buildings and modern shopping malls covered in red roof tiles, the 18th-century markets, the old mosques and churches, but it feels more like a Mediterranean, European city than a traditional Turkish one. In the village of Haldarsvík, you can enjoy views of the nearby island of Eysturoy, as well as a unique church with eight corners. A number of graves in the churchyard are adorned with marble dove sculptures. If you have an hour to spare, be sure to take a stroll around the village. In the north you will find the easily accessible, romantic and fascinating place of Sintra. Sintra became famous among foreigners after Lord Byron praised the beautiful monuments there. Scotturb bus 403 runs regularly to Sintra with a stop at Cabo da Roca. Go north and visit the beautiful Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima (a complex of temples), where internationally known Marian apparitions have taken place. Remember that you're really just visiting a mass grave, but also a place that has a profound meaning for much of the world's population. Many of the men and women who survived here are still alive, and many of them have loved ones who were murdered or worked themselves to death, both Jews and non-Jews. Show appropriate respect, solemnity and dignity during your visit. Do not trivialise the Holocaust or Nazism. Do not damage the site by marking or graffiti on the buildings. The official languages of Barcelona are Catalan and Spanish. Approximately half of the population prefers to speak Catalan, the majority can understand it, and almost everyone speaks Spanish. However, most signs are in Catalan, as it is the first official language according to the law. Spanish is widely spoken in public transport and other services. Normal announcements in the metro are only in Catalan, but unplanned interruptions are made by an automated system in several languages, including French, Arabic, Spanish, English and Japanese. Parisians are known for being egotistical, rude and arrogant. While this is usually just a stereotype, it can't hurt to put your best foot forward in Paris and act like a "bien élevé" (well-bred) person, which will make it much easier to navigate the city. The hard exterior of the Parisians disappears quickly once you show you know how they do things. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is heavily forested and consists mainly of beech, spruce and pine, with a combination of alpine and Mediterranean flora. There are many different plant communities, due to the different microclimates, the different soil types, and the varying elevations. The area is also home to a wide range of animal and bird species. Rare species such as the European brown bear, wolf, eagle, owl, lynx, wild cat and pheasant can be found, as well as many more common species. When women visit a monastery, they are required to wear a knee-length skirt and cover their shoulders. Usually you will get a scarf as a woman when you arrive unprepared at a monastery, but if you bring your own, with cheerful colors, the monk or nun at the entrance will smile at you. On the other hand, men must wear trousers that are at least knee-length. You can also borrow from the stock at the entrance, but this clothing is not washed after each use, so you may feel uncomfortable in it. One size fits all for men! Like many other Mediterranean regions, Mallorcan cuisine is based on bread, vegetables and meat (especially pork) and uses a lot of olive oil. A simple and popular dish for evening meals, especially during the summer months, is the Pa amb Oli: bread with olive oil, tomatoes and whatever spices are available, such as cheese, tuna, etc. Independent nouns, such as Sie, which means you, always have a capital letter at the beginning, even if they are in the middle of a sentence. In this way, you make a big difference between a few verbs and nouns. It also makes reading easier. However, writing is more complicated because you have to figure out whether a verb or adjective should be used as a noun. Most Italian words are written exactly as they are pronounced, so pronunciation is usually not a problem. Pay most attention to the "c" and the "g". Their pronunciation depends on the vowel that follows. You also need to pronounce the "r" and "rr" differently: caro means "little one," while carro means "wagon." Persian has a relatively simple and regular grammar. Reading this introduction to grammar will also teach you a lot about Persian grammar and help you understand sentences. It's pretty logical that if you know a Romance language, it's easier for you to learn Portuguese. But people who know a little Spanish can quickly conclude that Portuguese is so similar that it doesn't need to be learned separately. Pre-modern observatories are now outdated and serve as museums or educational attractions. Light pollution was not as much of a problem then as it is now, so they were often built in cities or on campuses, more accessible than those of today. Most modern telescopes are enormous facilities built in remote locations with favorable atmospheric conditions. Hanami is the viewing of cherry blossoms and has been a part of Japanese culture since the 8th century. In China, plum blossoms were the favorite flowers, and that's where the concept came from. The first cherry blossom festivals in Japan were organized by the emperor and were only for him and other aristocrats at the imperial court. Plants look their best in a natural setting, so you need to resist the urge to remove even a single species. If you collect monsters during a visit to a landscaped garden, you will be immediately and without discussion banned from the garden. Singapore is generally a very safe place to stay, very easy to navigate and almost everything is available once you arrive. But if you're in the "high tropics" but a few degrees north of the equator, you'll experience both heat (always) and intense sun (when the air is clear, which happens less often). There are also some buses going north to Hebron, the burial site of the biblical patriarchs Isaac, Jacob, Abraham and their wives. Make sure the bus you are taking is actually going to Hebron and not just to the nearby Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba. Inland waterways can be a good vacation destination. You can, for example, visit castles in the Loire Valley or the Rhine Valley, book a cruise to the interesting cities along the Danube, or take a boat trip along the Erie Canal. They also provide popular walking and cycling routes. Christmas is one of the most important Christian holidays, celebrating the birth of Jesus. People who do not believe in Christian countries and non-Christians around the world have also adopted many traditions associated with the holiday. There is a tradition of staying up all night until you can see the sunrise. Of course, there are Christian theological explanations for this tradition, but it could just as easily be a pre-Christian spring and fertility ritual. Many traditional churches hold an Easter Vigil on the Saturday night of the Easter weekend, celebrating the resurrection of Christ at midnight. All of the animals that were originally on the islands got there by swimming, flying, or floating. Because of the long distance from the continent, it was not possible for mammals to make the trip. As a result, the Galapagos giant tortoise became the most common grazing mammal on the Galapagos Islands. Since humans set foot on the Galapagos, various mammals have been introduced, including goats, horses, cows, rats, cats, and dogs. During the winter, the Arctic and Antarctic regions experience polar night, which means the sun does not actually rise. There's a good chance you'll be able to see the aurora borealis, as the sky will be mostly dark throughout the day and night. The areas are sparsely populated, so light pollution is not usually a problem, allowing you to enjoy the night sky. The Japanese work environment is more structured and formal than in the Western world. Packs are standard workwear and colleagues refer to each other by surname or job title. Unity on the shop floor is crucial. The focus is on group performance rather than individual work performance. Employees are often required to get permission from their supervisors before making decisions and are expected to blindly follow their supervisors' instructions.
