Popeye-1929 can generate images of the first initial apparence of Popeye. Olive and Harold (the Thimble Theatre original protagonist) can appear occasionally but are not linked to a specific keyword.

Dataset

Since 2025, the entire first run of Popeye comic strip is in the public domain. Popeye is originally a spin-off: he appeared as a secondary character in a longer running comic strip, The Thimble Theatre.

Yet the quality of comic strip source is not great and many image generation will have a surrealistic look.

The generated images aim to adhere to the 1929 design in order to have Popeye in the public domain. The base model is still largely relying on copyrighted images for base training: generated images should be checked to ensure they really are in the public domain design.
